SDSS Martial Arts of Ridgefield Belt Advancement

In Local, SDSS Ridgefield by SDSS

This is a good look at a belt advancement one recent Saturday afternoon in Ridgefield, CT.   In our system, students earn belt advancement by working on curriculum through a series of classes. They are then nominated for a belt test. Besides, most students think that the belt test experience is an absolute blast!  Tests are supervised by Senior Master Mikael Meyer or his designee.  Like any good teacher, your belt test administrator wants to see what you’ve learned.  They’re really pulling for you, and it becomes a wonderful growth experience. Students are expected to show what they’ve learned.  That includes …

In Local, SDSS Ridgefield by SDSS

Steve DeMasco’s Shaolin Studios of Ridgefield is where it has always been, on 15 Danbury Road in Ridgefield.  But our newly renovated space is so bright, so dramatic, and so beautiful it might as well be a whole new studio! The lobby underwent a dramatic expansion, accommodating the significant growth we’ve seen in Ridgefield.  It is an even brighter, sunnier space.  The expanded entrance to the dojo is reminiscent of the Shaolin Temple itself.   Only the entryway is much wider, allowing ALL our families to easily see how much fun everyone is having inside. “It was long overdue, and I’m …

Personalized Instruction

In National, SDSS Ridgefield by SDSS

At SDSS, students have the opportunity to receive semi-private instruction in addition to their regularly scheduled classes. “I started that model over 20 years ago,” said Grandmaster DeMasco. “Group classes are great for exercise, working with many other students, practicing what has previously been taught and group motivation. But, there are two major reasons for semi-private instruction.” “Learning the martial arts in a small group setting gives the student much more individual attention,” Grandmaster explains. In the small semi-private, students work on their curriculum, alongside a select group of students, most of whom are at a similar point in the …

Sparring for Kids and Teens Our kids are expected to grow up so fast. Psycho-social expectations, academic demands, and the digital universe all conspire to turn our kids into adults overnight. Why do we test for belt rank?

In Belt Testing, Local, SDSS Concord, SDSS Darien, SDSS Fairfield, SDSS Greenwich, SDSS Keene, SDSS Needham, SDSS Newtown, SDSS Pittsburgh, SDSS Portsmouth, SDSS Ridgefield, SDSS Wellesley, SDSS Westport, SDSS Wilton by SDSS

Belt rank advancement is one of the most important experiences in the martial journey, whether the student is 3, 33, or 73. Belt testing is not about the art, or the curriculum, or the studio. At any age, this process is about the student reviewing his or her own martial progress. In an era when the word “test” means “test scores” and “competition,” rank advancement is about true learning and personal growth. Rank testing for young children A young child learns self-confidence, self-discipline, and respect in a whole new way at a belt advancement. The moment they step on the …
